SML-RosBookAn edited book containing a chapter on the RCE movement was recently launched at London South Bank University (LSBU), the host institution of the London RCE (Regional Centre of Expertise) on ESD (Education for Sustainable Development).

The challenge of sustainability: Linking politics, education and learning, edited by Dr Hugh Atkinson and Professor Ros Wade (both from LSBU) and published by Policy Press, has a chapter titled ‘Regional Centres of Expertise (RCEs) as mobilising mechanisms for Education for Sustainable Development’.

With a central focus on the future of people and the planet itself, the book explores the links between politics, learning and sustainability. It argues that, in order to successfully meet the challenges of sustainability, we need a fundamental change in the way we do politics and economics, embedding a lifelong commitment to sustainability in all learning.

The book is structured into four sections:
• The challenge of sustainability – politics, education and learning
• What is to be done? Case studies in politics, education and learning
• What is to be done? Case studies in learning for sustainability from across the globe
• Emerging themes and future scenarios

The book is mainly targeted at academics and students in a variety of related subjects, including politics, public policy, education, sustainable development, geography, media, international relations and development studies. It will also be a valuable resource for NGOs and policy makers.

Dr Hugh Atkinson is Senior Lecturer in Politics at LSBU. He is the author of Local democracy, civic engagement and community: from New Labour to the big society (Manchester University Press, 2012). He is a founder member of the PSA (The Political Studies Association) specialist group on environmental politics. Ros Wade is Professor of Education for Sustainability at LSBU and Director of the international Education for Sustainability programme. She chairs the London RCE on ESD.

Professor Donnie Maclurcan (Co-founder and Executive Director of the Post Growth Institute) will speak on ‘The Not-for-Profit World Our Hearts Know is Possible’ at an Education for Sustainability (EfS) Discussion Evening at London South Bank University (LSBU) on 6 October 2014 from 17:00 to 19:00 (BST).

To sign up for a free ticket, please register via the link below:

That not-for-profit enterprise would be at the heart of the global economy by 2050 is the compelling vision outlined in a forthcoming book How on Earth: Flourishing in a Not-For-Profit World by 2050, co-authored by the speaker and Jennifer Hinton.

Based on a growing body of evidence that the world is shifting toward an ‘economics of enough’, this book and speaking tour offers insights into an exciting new economic model that is now sweeping to prominence after a quiet ascendency over the past decades.

The Post Growth Institute is an international group exploring and inspiring paths to global prosperity that don’t rely on economic growth. Its mission is to build and empower a broad-based global movement for identifying, inspiring and implementing new approaches to global well-being.

Professor Donnie Maclurcan is co-founder and executive director of the Post Growth Institute; Affiliate Professor of Social Science, Southern Oregon University; Distinguished Fellow, Schumacher Institute, and an Associate at the Institute for Sustainable Futures. He also led the development of the (En)Rich List, the Post Growth Challenge, and Free Money Day.

The London Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and the EfS programme of LSBU are pleased to host this event in association with the Weeks Centre for Social and Policy Research at LSBU.
